  • Smartwatch app experience is functional but far less rich than Apple or Wear OS devices

Who Is It For?

Committed athletes, outdoor professionals, and adventure users who care more about training depth, navigation, and battery life than app variety.

Our Expert Opinion

The Garmin Fenix 8 is a purpose-built performance tool disguised as a smartwatch. It combines multi-band GPS with Garmin's most advanced training analytics, a topographic mapping library, dive computer functionality, and a built-in torch in a case that is built to survive anything. For endurance athletes and outdoor professionals, it is simply the most capable device in this comparison.

Battery life is where the Fenix 8 puts its rivals to shame. The standard AMOLED variant lasts up to 16 days in smartwatch mode — and in GPS mode for a 24-hour ultra, it keeps tracking without needing a powerbank. The solar-assisted variants extend that further. This means you spend far more time using the watch and far less time managing its charge.

The Fenix 8 is not for everyone, and it is honest about that. Garmin's app store is modest compared with Apple or Google, and the interface, while logical and fast, is optimised for athletes rather than general users. If you primarily want notifications, quick replies, and a polished day-to-day experience, the Fenix 8 is overkill. But if training is a core part of your life, there is no better watch at any price.
